Shiseido vs Tatcha Moisturizer
Even the simplest of skincare routines *need* a moisturizer. Not only do they strengthen the skin barrier and target dryness & wrinkles, but they actually also make all of your other products more effective—and as someone who invests in their skincare, you want every drop to go as far as it possibly can towards giving you youthful, radiant skin.
Two of the best moisturizers you can buy are the Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Cream by Shiseido and The Dewy Skin Cream by Tatcha. Beyond the obvious differences between the jars, we're going to have to dive straight into their formulas to start seeing any real differences.
Truth be told, there are some major parallels between the two moisturizers. Both boast the ability to stave off visible signs of ageing such as wrinkles, and at the heart of both formulas are complexes of algae which help to replenish the skin's natural moisture reservoir and essential ceramides.
Furthermore, both products are packed with botanical extracts which further enhance the skin's moisture barrier function, meaning your skin stays plumped and hydrated for longer. Specifically, Tatcha's The Dewy Skin Cream contains Japanese Purple Rice (helps skin look healthier and balanced), Ginseng (reduces wrinkles), Wild Thyme (stimulates circulation), and Sweet Marjoram (calms skin), and Shiseido's Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Cream contains Indian Soapberry (anti-bacterial), Ashitaba (anti-aging), Turmeric (anti-aging), and Jujube (improves elasticity).
Other goodies included in Tatcha's The Dewy Skin Cream are Squalane (moisturizing), Tocopherol (antioxidant), and 24-Karat Gold (imparts a subtle gleam to the skin), whereas Shiseido's Benefiance Cream contains Niacinamide (minimizes pore appearance & redness), Caffeine (makes skin look brighter and smoother), Tocopherol (antioxidant), and Silica (reduces wrinkles).
Fundamentally, both formulas are extremely similar (with a keen focus on hydration, plumping, and anti-aging action), yet the ingredient lists themselves are wildly different - thus setting them apart. The Dewy Skin Cream offers something *different* with an unusual combo of nourishing ingredients, whereas the Benefiance Cream offers a more 'standard' approach to anti-aging with a more common set of actives.
In practice, they are both rich, silky creams that feel sumptous on the skin, and the results are incredibly similar, with both yielding plump, dewy, healthy skin within a matter of weeks. That said, consumer tests do seem to suggest that Tatcha's The Dewy Skin Cream has the edge with ~100% of participants reporting an improvement in radiance, plumpness, firmness, and hydration in 2 weeks (whereas Shiseido's study revealed only ~85% satisfaction for similar metrics over a 4 week period).
Tatcha's The Dewy Skin Cream catches our eye slightly more due to the inclusion of the unusual (yet extremely effective) skincare ingredients—gold, and japanese purple rice—which would suit anyone looking for something *different* to try. Shiseido's Benefiance Wrinkle Smoothing Cream boasts a much more traditional lineup of ingredients (as far as antiaging moisturizers are concerned), however, which would better suit those looking for a straightforward option.
