Summer Fridays Lip Balm vs Laneige
If you've been scrolling through TikTok lately, you will have definitely heard of Summer Fridays. Owned by a couple of beauty influencers—Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Ireland—they've hit the nail on the head when it comes to formulating viral skincare products.
But how does their latest best-seller stack up to another darling of the online beauty community: Laneige?
Let's dive straight into the comparison.

Summer Fridays vs Laneige
Let’s begin with the origins of both of these companies, as they are *quite* different.
Firstly, Laneige was founded in 1994 by South Korean beauty company Amorepacific. The brand uses cutting-edge water science and (rightly) call themselves the hydration experts. Laneige products are bursting with water and water-binding ingredients to promote plumper and healthier skin.
Now, 25 years since their inception, Laneige are one of the most popular skin companies in South Korea and are taking the rest of the world by storm.
Summer Fridays is a relatively young business, only launching in 2018. As mentioned in the intro, its co-founders are beauty influencers Marianna Hewitt and Lauren Gores Ireland.
They wanted to create a skin and make-up brand that was clean, effective and had beautiful packaging. We think they have done just that!
As both of these products are lip balms, it is no surprise that they share a similar ingredients list.
They both contain Shea butter and Murumuru butter. These butters combined deeply moisturize the lips. As well as this, they have soothing and healing properties—perfect for dry, chapped or sore lips.
As well as these moisturising ingredients, Summer Fridays’ Lip Butter Balm contains tocopherol and sodium hyaluronate.
Tocopherol is a form of Vitamin E. Vitamin E is used to soften, moisturise and repair the skin on the lips.
Sodium Hyaluronate is the scientific term for Hyaluronic Acid. All skincare junkies absolutely love HA. Hyaluronic acid is wonderful for plumping and hydrating the skin (or lips in this case!)
As well as the above-mentioned butters, Laneige’s Lip Glowy Balm contains Carnauba wax. Carnauba wax is used within lip products due to the fact it is able to bind water and oil.
This means water based ingredients as well as oil based ingredients are able to work together to create a glossy balm. It is also a great vegan alternative to beeswax.
Both of these lip balm’s come in multiple different shades and scents. Let’s start with Summer Fridays Butter Balm. This comes in four different shades; vanilla, vanilla beige, brown sugar and poppy. Laneige’s Lip Glowy Balm comes in five different shades; Berry (pink tint), Pear, Gummy Bear (lavender tint), Grapefruit (coral tint) and Peach (orange tint).
Summer Friday’s Lip Butter Balm comes in a 15g tube, retails for $24 and is 100% recyclable! Laneige’s Lip Glowy Balm comes in a slightly smaller 10g tube and retails for a little cheaper at $17.
It is great to know that both of these products are vegan and do not test their products on animals. Neither Summer Fridays or Laneige are non-comedogenic or hypoallergenic, though.
If a product is comedogenic it means that their products may contain ingredients that have the potential to block or clog the pores.
If a product is not hypoallergenic, then it means that their products could possibly contain certain allergens which could cause a reaction on the skin.
Due to the nature of these lip balms, they do both contain fragrances. This is perhaps why they are not classed as hypoallergenic products.
In conclusion, the hype surrounding the Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm is well-deserved.
Its ingredients list is slightly more convincing than its Laneige counterpart, and the results flooding your TikTok/YouTube shorts feed are more than testament to this.
The price is on the higher end of the scale, sure, but you're actually getting more value ounce for ounce with Summer Fridays since 15g of Laneige's Lip Glowy Balm would technically cost $25.50 (relative to Summer Fridays' $24!).
